This has always been a favorite picture.  We had this on our business card for years.  Check the hand positioning and left lead foot.  I believe it was a staged shot as most were.  The cameras of this time “showed” speed.

Read the caption.  The ever so sexy Flying Merkel.  Merkel was ahead of his time in engine building, using roller bearings instead of brass bushings and suspension in the front ends and a mono shock in the rear….. that-a-boy!   Pay particular attention to the helmet.  Did your mom make you wear one of these to school as well?

Notice the lack of drive chain…. this was so that you could push the bike easily.  You would have a hard time finding a free wheeling neutral on these bikes – push and go only……

These youngsters sure new how to fly…..
